An Interview With Danielle Downey

Danielle Downey, 8-under par (69-78-64=211)

Q. Talk about what worked for you this round, after shooting a 78 yesterday, you shot 8-under today.

DANIELLE DOWNEY: Yesterday was really tough, and the greens were quite firm; just a really tough day. I was actually playing a decent round yesterday. I had a bad hole on six, and I tripled it. I went from three-over on the day to 6-over, so it ended up being a tough day. You just have to wipe that out. I came back today, and the first two holes I hit in the bunker, then had two really good up-and-downs. After that, my caddie and I just had really good course management today, and some of the pins you could get at easier today. It seems they have water down there; a little bit softer. I made a couple putts.

Q. Five birdies on the last six holes. That was pretty impressive.

DANIELLE DOWNEY: Started on 13, had a pretty normal tee shot, then had a tap-in. Then the par-three, it was another tap-in. 15, it was probably a 20-footer, a little right-to-left, a couple inches. I hit number 16 in two, and made a good two-putt there for birdie. I had a good up-and-down on 17, and made a nice eight-footer here on the last hole.

Q. Who is your caddie?

DANIELLE DOWNEY: Rick Kropf.

Q. After a career-best today, what do you look to do tomorrow?

DANIELLE DOWNEY: I’ve shot low numbers before, just obviously not out here. I’ve definitely shot more in the 60s this year, under par, and I feel a lot more comfortable with that. After this round, you kind of need to forget about it, but at the same time you kind of need to keep it going. Today is over. I have 18 holes left, and it takes 72 holes to finish well in a golf tournament. I just have to focus on number one tomorrow. Today is over.

Q. So no matter if it was a bad round or it’s a good round?

DANIELLE DOWNEY: It’s over. You know, last night as soon as I left the course, I was done. It’s pretty much, it’s golf. It’s not the end of the world. You can always come back and have a better day tomorrow.

Q. Any part of your game today that you thought was key? The drives, the putting?

DANIELLE DOWNEY: Yeah, I hit a lot of fairways. I had three tap-in birdies, so that helped. I struck the ball well to get it to that point. I struggled on the first couple of holes, and then things started to click. On Thursday I was in the media tent and I was talking about how I went to Auburn, and we played Robert Trent Jones courses up there, and it was very, very similar to this. It doesn’t set up well for my game, but I know kind of how to play it. I grew up in a traditional, old-school golf course. This is definitely different from that. You can kind of work your way around, and use some of the hills on the greens, and you’ll figure it out.
