Round 3 Recap
Stanford takes lead at Bell Micro LPGA Classic, Hull four back
Angela Stanford (70-67-67=204, -12) shot a 5-under-par 67 in Saturday's third round of the Bell Micro LPGA Classic to take a four-stroke lead over Katherine Hull (71-69-68=208, -8) into Sunday' final round.
Stanford followed up the lone bogey-free round of the field on Friday with another 5-under performance, this time carding seven birdies and two bogeys. After a bogey on the third hole of the RTJ Golf Trail, Magnolia Grove's The Crossings course in Mobile, Ala., Stanford found a birdie opportunity on the fifth hole before adding another on the seventh and a final bogey of the day on the ninth to make the turn at even par. The 2003 ShopRite LPGA Classic champion started to warm up with a birdie on the 11th hole, but she caught fire on holes 13-16 with four-straight birdies to finish at 5-under and jump atop the leaderboard at the inaugural Bell Micro LPGA Classic.
The eight-year LPGA Tour veteran has held the lead or a share of the lead heading into the final round three times in her career, with the most recent being at the 2006 CN Canadian Women's Open where she finished second. She also finished tied for second at the 2006 Franklin American Mortgage Championship after being in the lead following 54 holes, and her lone victory on Tour came at the 54-hole ShopRite LPGA Classic in 2003 when she held the lead after 36 holes.
Meanwhile, Hull started off strong Saturday afternoon, carding her first birdie on the second hole and following with an eagle on the par-4, 448-yard fourth hole when she sunk a 45-foot eagle putt. She capped off the front nine with two more birdies and as many bogeys to make the turn at 3-under. The Australian winner of the CN Canadian Women's Open just two tournaments ago added additional birdies on the 10th, 12th, 15th and 16th holes and a lone bogey on the 14th, but an ensuing double bogey on the final hole set Hull back two strokes and added to Stanford's four-stroke lead.
Stanford and Hull will tee off together in tomorrow's final pairing at 12:30 p.m.
Park and Feng tied for third at Bell Micro LPGA Classic
2007 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year Angela Park (68-73-69=210) and current rookie Shanshan Feng (67-73-70=210) each hold 6-under-par 210 scorecards after 54 holes of play in Mobile, Ala., which tie the duo for third place. Park recorded six birdies and three bogeys on Saturday to jump from a tie for 11th after two rounds into a tie for third behind leader Angela Stanford (70-67-67=204, -12) and runner-up Katherine Hull (71-69-68=208, -8). As the only LPGA Tour player from China, first-year player Feng recorded an eagle, three birdies and three bogeys in round three at RTJ Golf Trail, Magnolia Grove Course. In all three rounds played at the Bell Micro LPGA Classic, Feng has fired an eagle, bringing her season total to four. Both Park and Feng look to the final round in hopes of picking up their first career victories.
Downey cards career- and field-low 8-under on Saturday
Danielle Downey put in the low round of the day with an 8-under-par 64 outing at the RTJ Golf Trail, Magnolia Grove Course. At 5-under 211, Downey (69-78-64) stands in a six-way tie for fifth place heading into the final round. On the aid of a bogey-free round of eight birdies on Saturday, the 2003 Auburn University graduate shattered her previous career-low round by four strokes (64), and tied her season-low 54 hole score (211). Looking ahead to Sunday's final round, Downey hopes to put together another solid round of golf and improve her best finish of the 2008 season, a tie for 14th-place at the SemGroup Championship Presented by John Q. Hammons.
Trio cards 67s to jump to fourth
Kim Hall (70-74-67=211, -5), Kristy McPherson (70-74-67) and H.J. Choi (71-73-67) all carded 5-under-par 67s in Saturday's third round of the Bell Micro LPGA Classic to improve to a six-way tie for fifth place after 54 holes in Mobile, Ala. Rounding out the trio, Choi composed a bogey-free round to improve from a 36-hole tie for 20th with Hall and McPherson into fourth place. Hall, McPherson and Choi are joined in the fifth spot by Hee Young Park (71-70-70) and 36-hole leader Cristie Kerr (69-66-76).
