Kerr heads into weekend leading at Bell Micro LPGA Classic
Fresh off her first victory of the year at the Safeway Classic Presented by Pepsi two weeks ago, Cristie Kerr (69-66=135, -9) enters this weekend with a two-shot lead at the Bell Micro LPGA Classic. The 11-year LPGA Tour veteran fired a 7-under-par 66 - her 26th round of 2008 in the 60's - to climb into the lead. Kerr recorded seven birdies and just a single bogey in round two and has now made the cut in all 20 tournaments she has played in this season. The 11-time LPGA Tour winner has set a new season-low score after 36 holes, at 9-under 135.
At the Safeway Classic in Portland, Ore., Kerr emerged victorious after carding a final-round 7 under 65 and defeated Helen Alfredsson and Sophie Gustafson in a one-hole, sudden-death playoff.
Stanford goes bogey-free en route to chasing down Kerr
Eight-year LPGA Tour veteran Angela Stanford (70-67=137, -7) was the lone player in Friday's second round of the Bell Micro LPGA Classic to card a bogey-free round, and her 5-under-par 67 shot her up the leaderboard into second place where she sits just two strokes shy of 36-hole leader Cristie Kerr (69-66=135, -9). Stanford began her round on the back nine, playing at even par through her first four holes. She notched her first of five birdies on the par-3, 139-yard 14th hole with a two-foot putt for birdie, and followed with her second subpar two holes later when she narrowly missed a seven-foot eagle putt. The two-time U.S. Solheim Cup Team member got the birdie fest going with three birdies in a five-hole stretch, beginning with her third birdie of the day on the second hole - her 11th. Stanford's remaining birdies came on the fourth and sixth holes.
In 2008, Stanford has four top-10 finishes under her belt including her most recent at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic Presented by Kroger (ninth place). Her season-best finish was tie for fourth at the Safeway International Presented by Coca-Cola. Stanford's first and last career victory was at the 2003 ShopRite LPGA Classic.
Ellis in third going into weekend in Mobile, Ala.
Michelle Ellis (68-70=138, -6) continued her strong play at the Bell Micro LPGA Classic, shooting a 2-under-par 70 in round two and heading into the weekend in sole possession of third place. The Australian player has now made the cut for the 11th time this season out of 15 tournaments played. Ellis has accumulated 12 birdies after the first two rounds at the RTJ Golf Trail, Magnolia Grove course, and will try to improve upon her highest finish of the year when she tied for 19th-place at the LPGA State Farm Classic. The seven-year LPGA Tour veteran has now played 14 rounds under par in 2008.
